I have done a new video tutorial every Thursday since I started blogging. I’m afraid that I’m breaking that streak today. I have been so busy writing posts for the 30 Day Braiding Challenge and working on product reviews that I did not manage to get a video in for this week. Instead, I have a great pictorial for you of this adorable (and easy!) red, white and blue side pony style.
I have had hairstyles for Independence Day on my mind for a couple of weeks now, especially since working up my More than 35 Hairstyles for the 4th of July post. I love holiday styles so much, and the 4th of July is a great holiday to do fun hairstyles for! Whether it’s for the parade, a cookout, or just to wear out running errands – a patriotic style is so fun to wear.
Let’s get started on how to do this 4th of July hairstyle!
Supplies you’ll need: 6 clear elastics, 3 sections of ribbon, topsy tail (optional), ponytail elastic, cute accessory.
Step 1. Tie the ends of your pieces of ribbon onto a clear elastic.
Step 2. Pull hair back into 3 sections going at a slight diagonal towards the other side of her head, then secure those sections with the elastics with ribbon tied to them. You want to tie it so that you go red, white and then blue on the bottom.
Step 3. Take your topsy tail through the middle of the top most ponytail, lift the hair from the ponytail and the ribbon and pull it through the opening in the topsy tail.
Step 4. Pull the end of the topsy tail so that it flips that section of hair (and the ribbon) over.
Step 5. Repeat Steps 3 & 4 on the other two sections of hair.
Step 6. Take the hair in the top most ponytail and divide it into 3 equal sized sections, then hold it so that you have (from left to right): hair, hair, ribbon, hair.
We are now going to do a 4 strand ribbon braid. If you would prefer to see a video tutorial to learn the technique, you can find one here.
Step 7. Take strand 1 and go OVER strand 2
Step 8. Take strand 1 and go UNDER the ribbon.
Step 9. Take strand 1 and go OVER strand 4.
Step 10. Take strand 4 and go OVER the ribbon (or you can think of it as moving the ribbon under strand 4. — the middle two strand switch places).
Step 11. Beginning on the left each time, repeat steps 7-10 until you have braided all the way down then secure with an elastic.
Step 12. Repeat steps 6-11 for the other two little ponytails, the white ribbon one and then the blue ribbon one.
Step 13. Gather the hair that is hanging loose into a side ponytail, then lay the ribbon braids nicely on top of the loose hair, secure with a ponytail holder.
Step 14. Trim the ends of the ribbon to the length that you desire.
Step 15. Add a cute bow or accessory.
You’re done!
