Laser hair removal vs electrolysis. Which is better as a hair removal solution? Each method has its pros and cons. Find out where you stand now.

Laser Hair Removal vs Electrolysis

There’s more than one way to remove hair (shaving, tweezing, waxing) and there is more than one way to permanently remove hair. So what’s the best solution to remove unwanted hair? The top two contenders for this are electrolysis and laser hair removal. I’ve written about the awesomeness of laser hair removal before, but wanted to give you a better picture of the two main options.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal works by using a pulsating beam of light to destroy the hair pigment. It’s advantage is in its precision and speed. The laser easily targets dark, coarse hair while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. It doesn’t hurt much and can treat many hairs at the same time.

The con for laser hair removal is that the laser is unable to pick up gray or blonde hairs. It’s extremely effective on

darker hairs but not so much if you don’t have that criterion.

What Is Electrolysis Hair Removal?

Electrolysis treats one hair at a time and has been around since the 1800s. It uses a current that is passed through a needle and inserted down the hair follicle. The benefit here is that it can catch those light hairs that the laser doesn’t detect— i.e., blonde hairs and gray.

The con for electrolysis is that it’s not great on larger areas because it attacks the individual hair follicle itself. This means it takes much longer than a laser because it’s going one hair at a time.

To compare, the legs can take 10 minutes with the laser while an electrolysis machine can take 15 minutes for one eyebrow let alone a leg! Also 15 – 30 sessions are needed to get the best results with electrolysis while 6 – 7 sessions are needed with the laser.

Prices of Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal

A 30 minutes session could cost you as much as $45 dollars for electrolysis. This means $45 for a small area like the eyebrows. For the laser you usually buy sessions in packages ranging from $200 – $800.

Which Hair Removal System Is Best?

Both hurt a bit but are tolerable. The laser has a snapping, hot sensation while electrolysis feels like it’s stinging or pricking you. Both procedures have minimal risk as long as you do it right. This means not going when you have a tan and not doing it close to your eye area. You should speak with a doctor or hair removal specialist prior or upon your first consultation. It’s possible on the rare occasion to experience discoloration or scarring.

As to which is the most effective my opinion favors the laser hair removal process. It’s worth it because the sessions go more quickly and takes less sessions to see results.

Blonde Hair Removal

There’s only one option for people with blonde or gray hairs. The laser cannot detect the pigment in the hair follicle because it’s too light. Therefore, if you have this hair type by default you need to use electrolysis.

Permanent Hair Removal For Men

Yay, men can do both. Obvious statement- it’s not gender-biased. Many men do it. So pass this along to any male that you think would be interested.

At Home Hair Removal

There are some at-home brands for both procedures that can save you travel time and expense. Here’s a list of some of the more popular brands. I tried The Tria but it wasn’t very effective. That was a couple of years ago though so in all fairness they likely have gotten better.

No matter which method you choose and where, just consider the time and cost each take. Be cautious of where you go as well. Make sure it’s reputable place so that you don’t end up replacing one problem with another.
