How it works.
An IPL device - also called laser hair removal device - will be used to permanently reduce unwanted hair.
It works by breaking the hair growth cycle - regrow - through the heat exposed to the hair follicles. The heat comes from the Intense Pulsed beam of Light - IPL - and so helping to prevent future hair growth.
Usually you might notice hair reduction after four treatments so your have to be patient.

It is recommended that IPL not be applied under the age of 18. There's just not enough research done.
Hair and skin types suitable for IPL or laser hair removal.
Suitable hair color.
Naturally dark blonde, brown and black hair is suitable for IPL treatments.
Mind that someone's hair color might be different depending on the area. One area can have lighter or darker hair than in another area. Laser hair removal is most effective with dark hair on a light skin.
Suitable skin tones.
Sensors in the IPL hair removal device will detect the tone of your skin.
Skin tones ranging from very white to dark brown are suitable skin tones.
Not suitable hair color.
The IPL works by means of absorbing by the color pigment - melanin - in the hair, so if your hair doesn't contain enough color pigment, IPL doesn't work. This is the case with white/grey and light-blond hairs.
Red hair isn't suitable because of a variant type of melanin that doesn't respond to the pulsed light.
Not suitable skin tone.
If the skin is very dark, the melanin in the skin will absorb the light too much, and so may cause skin damage like blisters, discoloring and burns, which is also confirmed by the FDA.
And don't use IPL in case of dark spots and tattoos, that are darker than your usual skin tone.

Safe for your skin.
Because of the UV filter in most IPL devices, the pulsed light only effects the hair and not the skin. So you don't have to worry about that, as the sensor prevents the device from emitting light pulses if your skin is too dark.
Facial hair treatment.
It is best to have your skin clean and shaven. Better not doing waxing.
Because the color pigment in darker, coarser facial hair absorbs more pulsed light, the grow reduction will be more than with lighter and finer hair.
If the area around your eyes is quite sensitive, it is recommended to use the device only below the cheekbones.
Men.
Because of the density of facial hair, it is not recommended that men use IPL on their face.
Eye protection needed?
The device only emits pulsed light (flash) when it is in full contact with your skin. If not full contact, it will not flash so it is unlikely that it can hurt your eyes. Nevertheless, don't use the device around your eyes, but it is not necessary to wear goggles. It is advised to use the device in a well-lit room, as it reduces the brightness of the pulsed light (flash) and will be less glaring to your eyes.
Bikini area.
It is recommended to use a lower device setting for darker and pigmented bikini areas, because those areas are more sensitive to the pulsed light and thus may feel less comfortable.
Laser hair removal before or after sunbathing?
After sunbathing:
- Don't use a laser hair removal device within 48 hours of sunbathing.
- Don't use it if you have sunburned skin.
Before sunbathing:
A laser hair removal treatment makes your skin more sensitive, so you should wait 24 hours or more before you take a sunbath - you might also use a sunblock cream.
According to the FDA, one should avoid sunlight healing after the procedure.
Men.
Men can also apply a laser hair removal device, but may need more treatments and get best results in neck, chest and stomach area.
As mentioned earlier, it is not recommended that men use IPL on their face, due to the density of facial hair.
Side effects.
- Warmth - During a treatment your skin may feel warm, burning, tingling ot itching. This is quite normal and will disappear after the treatment.
- Redness - Right after a treatment you might experience some redness but is harmless and normal. The redness will disappear.
- Change in pigment. laser treatment may lighten or darken

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration - FDA - you should be aware that hair removal/reduction with a laser system might not be painless or permanent. There sure is a difference between "permanent reduction" and "permanent removal", the latter may not happen to you.
The total number of body hairs may be permanent reduced, but that is not the same as permanent removal of all the particular hairs that you target. That is probably impossible.
