Going from a dark hair color to a light one isn't easy—and it's not usually doable in one salon visit. To illustrate this, hairstylist and salon owner Danielle Filice of Vixen Hair Salon in Los Altos, California, created an Instagram grid of Khloe Kardashian slowly lifting her hair color from dark brown to pale blond. "I try to explain to clients that there are stages to hair color," writes Filice. "I always use [Khloe Kardashian] as an example because she has done so much to her hair in the past two years."
Inspired by Filice, we created a grid of our own and tapped Kardashian's stylist, Redken celebrity colorist Tracey Cunningham, for her tips on going from zero to 100 with your hair color. Here's what she had to say.
On how she tackled Khloe's transformation:
"Khloe is naturally lighter than her siblings. The lightening process began by adding babylights, or fine highlights, to help create the dimension and brightness we wanted. Over the course of several months, the highlights and tonal shifts added up to a very lovely light blond hue."
On the ideal strategy to take when trying to lighten your color:
"The best way to go lighter is gradually with lots of conditioning treatments in between each service to help maintain healthy hair." Each time you color your hair, you're adding a little bit more damage, so you've got to take care to lift it just slightly at each step and keep putting moisture back in along the way. One of our favorite masks at the moment: IT'S A 10 Miracle Hair Mask ($30, ulta.com). Cunningham's word of warning before you get started: "Ask yourself how much time and money are you willing to invest in order to sustain the desired color, both in the salon and at home. Going from dark to light requires a lot of maintenance!"
On the way she tweaks the tone as she goes:

On what can you do along the way to keep the hair healthy:
She says to avoid chlorine, schedule regular trims, and cut way back on heat-styling. That doesn't mean you have to forgo your gadgets completely; just be smart about when you do reach for them. "Using a lower heat setting on the hot tools is another great tip for lighter and more fragile blonds," Cunningham says. And always remember to use a heat protectant to form a barrier over your strands and keep the color from fading. One to try: John Frieda Frizz-Ease Heat Defeat Protective Styling Spray ($6.59, drugstore.com).
