How to get rid of split ends without cutting your hair

Want to get rid of those split ends without cutting your hair? Don’t despair… there are a number of ways to fix those frazzled ends without having to use scissors. No matter what age you are, or what type of hair you are blessed with – frizzy, straight, curly or wavy, naturally colored or chemically treated – there is always a risk of the ever-dreaded split-ends for anyone who has long hair. While the only true way of getting rid of those nasty frayed ends is unfortunately by cutting the ends off the split strands, there are ways to prevent split ends from occurring in the first place, and several things you can do to manage them between hair appointments.

Tips to repair split ends:

1. Take care- First and foremost is to be gentle and kind to your hair and as with anything. Ask your hairdresser about a good hairbrush, as the incorrect brush can very often lead to split ends. Avoid using metal-bound elastics to tie your hair up if you are having a bad hair day or feel like wearing a ponytail, and use a good finishing spray or gel to create a beautifully smooth finish instead of harsh brushing to get the same effect.

2. Go natural- Choose to dry your hair naturally instead of always blow-drying. Constant blow-drying, along with the use of heat products, damages hair extensively and is a major contributor towards split ends. If you have to blow-dry your hair, make sure you always dry hair in a downward direction by using a round brush and an adjustable nozzle on your hair-dryer, which prevents intense heat being directly placed onto the hair.

3. Use good products- Always use good products on your hair, ranging from the brush you use to hair-dryers and styling tongs. Although these products might be slightly more expensive, it will be worth it in the long run. Cheaper styling tongs tend to overheat quickly, which damages hair, while a good professional-grade dryer will make a huge difference when drying your hair. An additional product you can purchase and use to prevent split ends is a good leave-in conditioner, which adds extra protection during and after heat-styling.

4. Take vitamin B- Folic acid and biotin help build the proteins that make up your hair strands and strengthen hair, which will in turn prevent split ends from occurring. You could also eat your way to healthier hair with foods rich in folic acid such as green leafy veggies, oranges, soybeans and wheat. Biotin strengthens both hair and nails through its metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, so go for brown and soybeans, which are all rich in biotin.

5. One at a time- When it is time to visit the salon, hold off on having too many treatments at once, which damage hair extensively. Whether it is a color treatment, highlights, or a perm, limiting the amount of work done on your hair will limit the chemical processes used for such treatments and prevent further damage.

6. Cut cut cut- Last, but definitely not least is get regular cuts! If you trim your hair at regular intervals, it encourages healthy growth of the strands, keeps ends neat and tidy, and goes a long way towards keeping those split ends at bay.
