Pimples or acne are skin lesions/inflammations that occur when the sebaceous glands (oil glands) of the skin get infected with bacteria and swell up. Pimples are also known as pustules or papules, spots, and zits. The sebaceous glands that are present throughout the skin, except in the palms and soles, secrete a waxy or oily substance called sebum. The sebum helps to maintain the oil balance of the skin and makes it look healthy. When there is any abnormality in the sebaceous gland, pimples develop (1).

Acne Prevention Tips
Doctors advise treating pimples immediately to prevent them from spreading. Acne, if left untreated, can leave scars on the skin, which become very difficult to remove. Pimples can develop due to various reasons. Here are a few:
1. Dead Skin Cells Build Up
The skin sheds a layer of dead skin cells. A few dead skin cells get stuck to the sebum, which causes blockage of the pores. These blocked pores become pimples (1).
2. Heredity
If you have a genetic problem, the pimples on the face will reoccur through your lifetime. The genetic rationale behind it is that the hyperactive sebaceous glands produce a lot of sebum, leading to pimple formation. In this case, you should consult a skin specialist as home remedies and natural methods may not provide a permanent solution to your problem. For serious acne or pimples, oral medication is necessary for a particular time period. Procedures such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion can be very effective as they minimize the occurrence of acne and also reduce acne spots and blemishes (1, 2).
3. Teenage Pimples
Pimples commonly occur during puberty, and both young boys and girls face it. When the body undergoes physical changes and gets ready for reproduction, the sebaceous glands become overactive. The sebum build-up also blocks pores and causes pimples (1).

4. Hormonal Pimples/Acne
If you think that you don’t need to fear pimples anymore since you are no longer a teenager, your perception is wrong. Adult pimples or acne are caused due to hormonal imbalance in the body. It is a very common symptom of PMS and also occurs during the menopause period (1, 2).
5. Bacterial Growth
The sebum gets accumulated behind blocked pores. This sebum that builds up behind the blocked pores contains bacteria. A slow growing bacterium, Propionibacterium acne, thrives naturally in the skin. When the conditions are suitable, this bacterium spreads and cause painful pimples. It feeds on sebum and produces a substance that leads to an immune response and also causes skin inflammation (3).
6. Sensitive To Testosterone
People with skin prone to acne are usually sensitive to testosterone, a natural hormone present in both males and females. In such people, the testosterone triggers oversecretion of sebum, which leads to blockage of pores. Sometimes, dead skin cells get stuck to the sebum and make matters worse (4).
A report presented by New York University and published in The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that eating high glycemic foods like bakery goods and sweet beverages that are high in sugar content causes pimples (5). Having too many dairy products is also not good for your skin, though they are high in calcium. These pimples can be corrected by following the right diet.
8. Oily Food
This is the most important reason for pimple formation in today’s generation. Eating a lot of fried and processed food triggers your oil glands and produces sebum, which leads to pimples, blackheads, and breakouts.
9. Medicines Cause Acne
Some epilepsy medicines and medicines that have androgens in them cause pimples.
10. Skincare Products
While using your favorite beauty products, you often forget the fact that these can also cause pimples and blackheads. Using products that are not suitable for your skin type is a complete no-no. Also, switching products very frequently causes a lot of harm to skin. The new ingredients in the product can irritate your skin and cause pimples and breakouts.
11. Not Removing Makeup
Greasy, oil-based makeup can cause pimples. Avoid applying heavy makeup and try to use water-based cosmetics (2). Always stick to natural products since chemicals can cause acne breakout as well.
12. Traveling
When you travel far, the change in the environment, like the weather, temperature, humidity, water, etc., triggers the formation of pimples.
13. Stress
Another main cause of pimples is stress. Your body functions get upset during stress, and this triggers pimples. Stress cannot alone cause a pimple, but it aggravate the problem by releasing inflammatory chemicals called neuropeptides (1, 2).
14. Friction Or Rubbing Skin
When you rub your skin constantly or pick at pimples, they grow worse. Even the pressure exerted by bags, helmets, and tight collars or scarves can aggravate acne.
People of all races and ages get acne. Acne is most common amongst teenagers and young adults, with about 80% of people affected between the ages of 11 and 30. It also affects a few people in their forties and fifties as well.

- Cysts: These are deep pus-filled pimples. It is definitely easy to remove pimples by using some of the above-mentioned home solutions.
Foods To Eat – A healthy diet that is rich in all nutrients will ensure that your skin is healthy and acne-free. Include the following in your diet:
- Whole grains
- Lean meat like fish and oysters
- Vegetables like sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, carrots, cucumber, asparagus, broccoli, and bell peppers
- Fruits such as berries, oranges, pumpkins, papayas, cantaloupes, apricots, peaches, and apples
- Walnuts, flaxseeds, roasted pumpkin seeds, roasted squash seeds, dried watermelon seeds
- Green tea
- Yogurt
- Dark chocolate
Foods To Avoid – Food items that increase the sugar and insulin levels in the blood can increase the risk of inflammation and cause excess sebum production. It is better to avoid these to prevent acne breakouts:
- Cow’s milk and other dairy products
- Sugary food such as cookies and cakes
- High glycemic food such as white bread, white rice, potato chips, and processed breakfast cereal
- Junk food and greasy food
- Chocolate
Vitamins – When your diet doesn’t supply the body with essential vitamins, it is a good option to opt for supplements that will replenish your body with these vitamins and keep your skin acne-free.
- Vitamin A (retinol) is an antioxidant that affects the health of your skin, brain, and eyes. It helps in the renewal of cells on the skin’s surface and prevents the build-up of dead skin cells, which are usually the cause of clogged pores and acne (62).
- Vitamin D keeps your skin soft and glowing. It reduces inflammation in the case of acne and also helps the immune system to fight infections (63).
- Different types of vitamin B, namely B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B6 (pyridoxine), regulate various processes in the body such as digestion, circulation, immune response, and adrenal function. Optimum levels of these are required for healthy skin, hair, and nails (64).
- Vitamin C boosts the body’s immune response and is also important for tissue growth and repair (65, 66).
- Vitamin E is another antioxidant that helps the skin to heal quickly and stay hydrated (67).
Dealing with acne is not just about using home remedies, creams, and lotions. You need to make changes in your daily lifestyle and diet as well to maintain that healthy and clear skin.
- Drink More Water – Keeping your body hydrated by drinking enough water during the day will reflect on your skin. When your skin isn’t sufficiently hydrated, the body will produce more oil to compensate for it. This will lead to acne. Drink 8-10 glasses of water every day.
- Exercises – Stress is one of many reasons that can cause pimples. Exercise is an easy way to de-stress and calm your mind. Include simple aerobic exercises like walking, running, and jogging in your routine.
Yoga is another form of exercise that you can do in the comforts of your home to help you deal with acne. Poses like the Rabbit’s Pose, Child’s Pose, Triangle Pose, and others help you relax and balance your body’s systems.
- Sleep – Less sleep can cause your skin to produce more sebum, and this can cause acne. Sleep deprivation can also increase the stress levels and worsen your acne. Sleeping for at least six to eight hours every day is recommended
- Avoid Smoking – Smoking causes free radicals and toxins to build up in your body. These cause hindrances in the normal functioning of your systems and organs and can make your skin look dull. Smoking can also trigger acne.
- Avoid Alcohol – Excessive intake of alcohol can disrupt your liver and immune system and make your skin more susceptible to developing acne.
- Skin Care – Follow a daily skin care routine that involves using the right cleanser, toner, and moisturizer for your skin. Use the face packs that are mentioned above once or twice a week, and you will definitely see your skin become clearer and brighter.
Imagine this – you have a party to go to or have an interview lined up, and a pimple decides to pay you a visit. You are devastated and need a quick fix. Don’t be disheartened because makeup can be your saving grace, whether it is to cover a random pimple or many more with scars around your face. Follow these simple steps and techniques to cover acne effortlessly:
- Firstly, cleanse and pat dry your face.
- Moisturize your skin with an oil-free moisturizer.
- Take a pea-sized amount of makeup primer and gently massage it on the face, especially around the problem areas. This will make your makeup smoother and last longer.
- Let the primer breathe for a minute or two.
- Now, dab some green concealer on the acne spots. The green from the concealer will fade away the redness of the acne. You can use your regular concealer as well.
- Blend the concealer using gentle dabbing motions with your fingertips.
- Now, take one to two pumps of a foundation that suits your skin tone and blend it in. You can use either a stippling brush, a buffing brush, a beauty blender, or even just your fingers for this.
- Set your base with a makeup setting powder. Apply it with a fluffy powder brush and brush away any excess.
- If you do not have any setting powder, an easy way to remove excess oil and make your makeup last all day long is to dab a tissue paper gently all over the face.
- Once your base makeup is applied and all set, apply the rest of your makeup (for the eyes, lips, and cheeks) as you please.
- Preferably, use a very light blush on your cheeks. Using darker blushes will make it difficult to camouflage your acne and acne scars.
You can always use a makeup setting spray in the end to set your complete look. However, this step is completely optional.

This latest development in the acne treatment field is recommended for people who suffer from red, inflamed acne. The bacteria that cause acne, Propionibacterium acnes, is sensitive to blue light. This means that when this bacteria that is residing in the oil glands of your skin is exposed to blue light, it dies. Also, the heat that accompanies the blue light causes the oil glands to shrink and reduces the sebum production. A wholesome treatment for acne!
Most of the herbs used in the herbal treatment of acne fall under Ayurvedic treatment. Apart from the ones mentioned above, Ayurvedic medicine also relies on using the right combinations of dried and fresh herbs that treat acne. Triphala guggulu, chandanasava, and sarivadyasava are some of the Ayurveda medicines used.

- Use a face mask at least once a week to clean the pores.
- Steam your face regularly. It helps to open the pores and makes the removal of pimples and blackheads very easy and effective.
- Wash your makeup tools like brushes and sponges to remove all the dirt, oil, and bacteria from them.
- Drink 10-12 glasses of water daily to flush out all the impurities from the body.
- Avoid touching your face with your hands regularly. Also, while talking over the phone, keep it away from your face. While doing so, you will transfer all the dirt and bacteria from your hands or phone to your face, thus increasing the risk of pimple formation.

- Consumption of too much iodine (iodized salt) can lead to pimple and blackhead outbreaks. Excess of sodium also leads to weight gain. So reduce the amount of salt in your daily diet.

The sebaceous glands or oil glands are where the acne form. These glands are more developed on the face, neck, scalp, and chest. Also, the face is more exposed to pollution and bacteria compared to the rest of the body. Both these factors work together to make acne mainly affect the face.
If you have popped a pimple by mistake, wash your hands and gently wash the affected area. Use an antiseptic to disinfect the area. A simple home remedy would be to just dab some turmeric powder on the popped pimple and leave it on. This will prevent the pimple from getting infected again and also reduce the chances of the popped pimple leaving a scar. Follow the same steps even if the popped pimple bleeds after being squeezed. Disinfection and using an antiseptic/antibacterial is essential.

- Smoking
- Milk and dairy products
- Chocolate
- Certain medications like birth control pills
- Hair products that contain skin irritants
- Too much iodine in the diet
- Oily and greasy food
Face mapping acne: What is your acne telling you?
Based on Chinese face mapping techniques and Ayurveda, your face is divided into different zones that denote different systems or organs in the body. A pimple in a particular zone signifies that there is an issue with the system/organ it stands for. The different zones are listed below:
- Forehead – A pimple in this area indicates poor digestion, accumulation of toxins, and also lack of water in the body.
- T-Zone And Nose – This zone is connected to the liver, and a pimple here suggests an issue with the functioning of the liver. Also, skin problems in this area are linked to the heart function and blood pressure.
- Around The Eyes – This area is linked to the kidneys, and a skin condition here like acne or dark circles indicates that you should pay attention to your kidneys’ health.
- Upper Cheeks – The lungs are associated with this area, and pollutants, respiratory infections, and allergies lead to pimples in this area.
- Lower Cheeks – Pimples in this area indicate poor dental hygiene.
- Ears – This area is also associated with the kidneys and breakouts here indicate dehydration.
- Chin – This facial area is connected to the small intestine.
Men will notice that their acne becomes worse after masturbation. This is because the hormones that are released post masturbation cause the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, especially in the facial area. As a result, the pores get clogged easily, and more breakouts occur.
When the acne has freshly healed, it leaves behind red marks that may become darker and deeper with time. These acne scars can easily be gotten rid of if you start using the right home remedies from the beginning. Some of the best home remedies for getting rid of acne scars are:
- Apply fresh aloe vera gel two to three times a day on the acne scars.
- Apply a paste of turmeric powder and lemon juice on the scars and rinse it off after a couple of times. Repeat this daily.
- Apply raw honey on the scars twice a day.
- You can also apply tea tree oil to diminish scars and also avoid further infections.
- Raw potato juice or raw tomato juice also works well to lighten acne scars.
Is vodka a good toner for your face to help prevent acne breakouts and shrink your pores?
Not surprisingly, the answer to this question is yes. Vodka works as an astringent because of its alcohol content. When applied on the face, it cleanses it and kills the bacteria. It is also said to shrink pores. Unfortunately not many people have tried this remedy. However, there are a few who vouch for it. If you do plan to try this rather offbeat home remedy, be prepared as vodka might sting on the sensitive, inflamed skin.
The home remedies listed in this article will not only help you get rid of the acne, but they will also help you reduce the acne scars and smoothen your skin. The key components of these remedies work to give your skin a healthy and smooth texture. Remedies like coconut oil, aloe vera, jojoba oil, honey, and milk will aid in getting smooth skin after the acne heals.
Using home remedies such as lemon juice, olive oil, vitamin E oil, and baking soda will prevent dead skin build-up and slowly fade away even deep acne scars. Diligently using these remedies is essential to get rid of the deeper scars.
More than 80% of adolescents suffer from acne. Even adults and younger children are affected by these annoying breakouts. A simple pimple may take three to seven days to go away by itself. Sometimes, they last longer and indicate a more complex underlying cause that needs to be treated.
