Honey Homemade Face Wash for Blemish Free Skin

Honey Homemade Face Wash for Blemish Free Skin

Honey homemade face wash for blemish free skin, great for sensitive or irritated skin too - The Herbal Spoon

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with soap over the past 10 years. On one hand you need something to stay clean and un-stinky, but on the other hand I have super sensitive skin. Even the purest of natural soaps will cause my post shower skin to feel like it’s been attacked with a bristly scrub brush then doused in lemon juice. So that pleasant smelling, handcrafted bergamot soap quickly becomes my arch nemesis. This homemade face wash recipe though is a different story.

So what did I do? I stopped using soap. Yep, I’m not ashamed to admit that I haven’t regularly used soap, except for certain extra necessary bodily areas for the past 10 years. Don’t worry though, I’m water washing my skin and giving it a gentle scrub down with a washcloth instead.

Soap and I are frenemies

My face, for whatever reason, has been a little more resilient to my attempts to wash it. I remember in middle school though, when my face was riddled in acne, that my dad insisted I try Ivory soap. It was pure. It was great for skin. What could happen?

My face was so red, blotchy and inflamed afterwards, that I looked liked I’d been stung by an angry beehive. And it felt like it too. So no more Ivory soap for this girl.

I had been using a pure as can be bar soap on my face whenever I’d think to for the past year or so. It was still very drying for me though. Lotion is another no go for me, but I discovered that using a carrier oil like sweet almond oil relieved the dryness without feeling like my skin was burning off my face. (update: Lately I’ve been using my homemade rose lotion recipe and

adding some frankincense and geranium oils)

The beauty of honey

Recently though, I switched to using a DIY honey face wash. Since there’s no soap in this, my skin feels soft, moisturized and yes, even clean!

It may sound counter intuitive to rub your face all over with sweetener, but raw honey has some pretty amazing properties. It’s clarifying, full of anti-oxidants, calming to skin, and nourishing (source). This makes it the perfect choice for the delicate skin on your face.

I just had to add esssential oils to this recipe as well. Because different oils have different properties, certain ones work better with different skin types, though many are all encompassing.

Beneficial oils to add to your face wash

  • Lavender– soothing and calming to the skin, supports healthy cellular regeneration
  • Lemon– reduces appearance of spots and discoloration.
  • Frankincense – reduces the appearance of scars and wrinkles, soothing and evens skin tone.
  • Geranium – reduces the appearance of wrinkles, promotes healthy circulation.
  • Cedarwood – helps clarify skin, soothes red and irritated skin, good for oily skin.
  • Melaleuca – helps regulate oil production and reduces the appearance of acne.

Carrier oils

There’s a lot to be said for what carrier oil to use for what. This article gives a great rundown of different carrier oils, how they work with skin and the why behind it all. I’ve found that sweet almond oil works well with my normal skin type. My husband has irritated skin though, so I used rosehip seed and evening primrose oil in his honey face wash.

Because this recipe has water in it, be sure you use clean and sterilized utensils and containers and use filtered or distilled water. I used filtered water that I also boiled. You don’t want any bacteria enjoying your face wash! The honey helps act as a natural preservative too.

Honey Homemade Face Wash

For red, irritated skin

  • 1/3 cup honey – get it here
  • 1 tsp each evening primrose, rosehip seed and jojoba oil – get them here
  • 2 Tbsps water – the filter I use
  • 10 drops each cedarwood, melaleuca, lavender and geranium oils

For normal skin

For mature or dry skin

  • 1/3 cup raw honey – get it here
  • 2 Tbsps water – the filter I use
  • 1 teaspoon each avocado oil, rosehip seed oil and sweet almond oil – get them here
  • 10 drops lemon oil
  • 5 drops geranium oil
  • 5 drops ylang ylang oil
  • 10 drops frankincense oil
  • 10 drops lavender oil

  1. If your raw honey is very thick, pour it into a very clean saucepan, add the water and gently heat, stirring constantly. You want to heat this just enough to soften the honey and combine it with the water.
  2. Pour all of the ingredients into a clean soap dispenser and shake thoroughly to combine.
  3. Shake well before each use since the honey tends to sink to the bottom.
  4. To use, rub a nickel size amount onto the face using upward brushing circles. I like to leave mine on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off, though it isn’t entirely necessary.
