My latest venture has been to experiment with homemade probiotic deodorant. I found a recipe on Pinterest and was, of course, interested in why I would want to make my own deodorant and include probiotics in it.

Our pits smell, not because of sweat, but because of the bad bacteria that likes to collect in the dark area under our arms. I have read a few articles that say adding the probiotic to the deodorant helps to regulate the good bacteria which keep the bad bacteria from taking over and causing stink.

Our bodies are meant to sweat. It’s what keeps us from getting overheated. Antiperspirants work by clogging the pores underneath our armpits, which blocks the body from doing what it needs to do. Is this bad? I don’t know… I’m not a scientist, but it seems like our bodies should not be prevented from doing something they are supposed to.

Besides that little bit of information

, there are many chemicals in store-bought antiperspirants that you probably don’t want touching your body and being absorbed into your skin.

For these reasons, I decided to try out a homemade version of deodorant. This deodorant has all natural and known ingredients! I have only used it a few days, but already love it. I haven’t done anything strenuous so I don’t know how it will hold up when truly put to the test. The true test will be labor and birth in a month or so.

How to Make your Own Homemade Non-Toxic Deodorant

  1. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in cornstarch and baking soda using chopsticks, until well combined and dissolved.
  3. Add essential oil
  4. Let mixture cool in the pan.
  5. Once cooled, and slightly thick like pudding, open capsules and add the probiotics to the mixture.
  6. Stir with a spatula quickly.
  7. Add mixture to an old, clean deodorant container and allow to cool and harden in the refrigerator.

Tip: Use a shelf-stable probiotic in order to not need refrigeration after hardening.

While these products may seem expensive at first look, they go a REALLY, really long way. I bought most of them for Christmas projects and have been using them for many things since then.

Have you ever tried making your own homemade deodorant?
