DIY Dry Shampoo For Dark Hair

With a baby in the house, I definitely don’t get to take a shower every day anymore! I keep telling myself “I’ll do that next” and then somehow it’s 6pm and I still haven’t showered! If this happens to you too, I have the perfect solution: DIY dry shampoo. Just apply the dry shampoo to your roots with a makeup brush, tousle your hair with your fingers to rub it in, then style your hair like normal; the greasy shine is gone, and the dry shampoo adds a ton of volume to your hair! This DIY dry shampoo is for dark hair, but if you have light hair, you can use the same recipe, just leave out the cocoa powder.

This DIY dry shampoo for dark hair is so quick and easy to make, and only requires a few ingredients. Plus this bottle will last you a couple of months, depending on how often you use it.

DIY Dry Shampoo For Dark Hair

  • 3 minutes (time spent doing stuff)
  • 0 minutes (time spent waiting around)
  • 3 minutes (total project time)

Ingredients

  • 2 T cocoa powder (skip this if your hair is light colored)
  • a few drops of essential oil in your favorite scent (I used lavender)

Instructions

Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl. Then add in a few drops of your favorite essential oil and stir with a whisk to combine.

Transfer the DIY dry shampoo to an airtight container (you can find small glass bottles with a cork like the one I used at Michaels or on Amazon).

When you’re ready to use it, dip a makeup brush into the powder, then apply it to the roots of your hair. I like to use a small powder brush like this one; it’s big enough that it doesn’t take forever to apply the shampoo, but it’s compact enough that you can get the powder right on your roots instead of all over your entire head.

Apply enough to really coat all the greasy areas. Don’t worry about applying too much; any extra will brush out later.

Once you have the DIY dry shampoo on your roots, run your fingers through your hair and tousle it to help spread out the powder.

Let it sit in your hair for 2-3 minutes so the powder can absorb excess oils from your hair. Then use a brush or your fingers to brush out any extra powder, and style your hair like normal!

So, don’t judge, but this is what my hair looks like the morning of the third day without a shower. Blech!

I put the DIY dry shampoo in, let it sit for a few minutes, ran my fingers through my hair (my hair is pretty short, so I just brush it with my fingers instead of a brush), and this is what it looked like after. The greasy shine is all gone, and it adds a ton of volume to your hair too! (Don’t mind the weird swooshy bedhead curls going on at the back of my head; I took these photos first thing in the morning!)

So much
better! Once the dry shampoo has done it’s job, you can style it like normal!
