For those of you who follow OGT on Facebook, you might remember that I recently had an unfortunate experience with eyelash extensions. As in I
After that debacle, I decided to look into other ways I might augment my somewhat skimpy lashes. My eye doctor actually gave me a prescription for something called Latisse which is supposed to really deliver on longer lashes! My problem with it is that it has to be applied every single night! I am lucky to get my makeup off every night, let alone paint a very delicate line of lash serum along both eyelids with a special little brush! As much as I like to THINK I will do it in pursuit of the perfect lashes, in reality it just isn’t going to happen.
This sad state of affairs led me to look into OTHER options for growing longer lashes and I was actually surprised to find there are some that seem quite promising!
Be Gentle
Mascara removal can wreak havoc on your lashes. Be sure to use products that aren’t waterproof. Waterproof mascaras have a tendency to dry out lashes and make removal a struggle. Also, try giving your lashes a break from products and just let them breathe every once in awhile.
Petroleum (or Non-Petroleum) Jelly
Vaseline has long been a mainstay of home remedies to increase eyelash length. Just apply the petroleum jelly before you go to bed with a clean mascara wand. Wash off the jelly in the morning and repeat three times a week.
If you aren’t a fan of the original petroleum based jelly (ie. Vaseline), you could try a non-petroleum jelly (I found some at Whole Foods) or make your own Non-Petroleum Jelly.
Green Tea
Take advantage of the beneficial properties of green tea, such as flavonoids. Dip a cotton ball in green tea and smear it over the eyelashes. The tea will stimulate growth and help clean the follicles, allowing growth to occur.
Brushing
Stimulate growth and promote healthy lashes by brushing lashes twice a day, to distribute natural oils along the length of your lashes.
Lemon Olive Oil
Olive oil protects, conditions and lengthens eyelashes. You can also enhance the already healthy properties of olive oil by adding lemon essential oil or soaking lemon peels in olive oil for a couple of days. Lemon is a natural antiseptic and antimicrobial agent. Apply mixture to your lashes at bedtime and remove in the morning
Proper Diet
Eating a healthy diet rich in protein and vitamins helps eyelash hair grow. Good foods to help your eyelashes grow include fish, eggs, beans and yogurt. Soy protein is also beneficial for simulating eyelash growth.
Eyelid Massage
Massaging your eyelids gently can increase blood flow and may stimulate growth of lashes. After washing your hands well, use the pads of your fingers to massage along your lids and lash line.
And last but not least….
Eyelash Serum
Make your own Eyelash Thickening Serum with Coconut Oil. It requires only a couple ingredients! Fractionated Coconut Oil and Lemon and Lavender essential oils. The fractionated coconut oil has a natural pulling action that draws out impurities and enters the eyelash follicles to stimulate regrowth. Just add 1 drop of Lemon to enhances the oil’s cleansing and stimulating properties, and add 1 drop of Lavender to nourish your lashes and follicles. Fill the rest of the roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil, and rub it on daily.
If you’re in pursuit of longer lashes like me, give some of these a try along with me and report back!
