Don’t let this headline fool you: A standard red lip has been my go-to ever since I started wearing lipstick. I love it! It’s simple, looks good in any season, and I rarely have to wonder whether or not it matches my outfit (on the few occasions that I actually care about that). But let’s be real, if red is your standby, sometimes you can get a little tired of it. And even if it isn’t, your typical lipstick color might be overdue for an overhaul anyway. Life is too short for nothing but consistency especially when it comes to your personal style.

Apparently it’s National Lipstick Day, so why not celebrate by trying out something a little different for your lipstick routine? Try these 8 different lipstick looks. From bold colors to alternative ways to wear lipstick all together, you’ll find something that catches your eye.

1. All black everything lipstick.

Yes, I know this is intense and a little intimidating, but trust me: A black lip with the right outfit can look absolutely killer. You don’t have to be a goth or super alternative to pull it off either. To make things easy, just wear a lot of dark colors and slap on a bit of black makeup instead of your usual color. You’ll be surprised by how cool it looks, especially when you flash those pearly whites of yours. I (pictured) had a hard time adjusting to it at first, but now I’m in love.

2. ’20s style bow lip.

A lot of the time, I find that people recreating flapper fashion today looks pretty…hokey. But if there’s one thing that should definitely be salvaged from the jazz era, it’s this bow lip look. I’m not sure if it’s called the bow lip because it draws attention to the cupid’s bow or because it’s named after Clara Bow, an actress from the ’20s who often rocked this look. Either way, it looks awesome. The point is that your whole lip isn’t filled with color…it’s like you’re drawing on a new set of lips on top of your own. Just use liner to mark where you want the corners of the bow lip to end and fill it in. It might look a little theatrical, but you can apply it in a way that doesn’t make you look like you’re about to put on a show.

3. Pastel lipstick.

This definitely won’t be for everyone, but it’ll definitely look bolder than a straight up red lip. There are a lot of brands offering these pastel lip colors these days. Check out the brand Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics to start off with. They have every color under the sun!

4. Ombre lip look.

I know that ombre hair had its moment, but is the ombre lip still cool? I think so. A lot of makeup experts on the internet go all out with their ombre lip, to the point that it doesn’t even look right for the average person to wear casually. But check out the tutorial above as a guide and use like colors for a more subtle approach to ombre.

5. Accentuated cupid’s bow.

This is ultra high fashion, but it still looks really cool, right? Just take a bit of sparkly lip liner and mark your cupid’s bow. You can also use a bright lipstick if you apply it with a thin brush. You can fill your lips in with another color or leave them plain, though if it’s the latter, consider slapping on some clear gloss just so that your lip look doesn’t look like an accident.

6. Two-tone lip.

Ah! How rad does this look? There’s no secret to this look, really. Just apply two of your favorite lip colors to your lips! If you want to get a little more geometric and color blocked, use a makeup brush for your application.

7. Ultra-violet lipstick.

Violet and its many shades look so good on just about every skin type, and you should absolutely give it a try. Yes, it’s very bold, but sometimes that’s what you want to go for. There are so many types of violet though, so make sure you find one that pairs with your skin tone. Yes, there is at least one shade that does, trust me! Yes, even if you’re super pale.

8. Glittery lip look.

Buy some loose glitter, take a makeup brush, and gently dab a little onto your lips after you use your lipstick of choice. A little bit goes a long way, so be careful or else you’ll look a little too festive.
